Skills Post 2 - Summarizing and Paraphrasing

Do you know the word, 'summarizing and paraphrasing'? Both things make the article to easier to read. Summarizing means communicate the main ideas of a long passage in a paragraph to relay information about books, articles, movies, or other things. Paraphrasing means to communicate the exact same meaning using your own words. This used in academic research, to make a difficult passage easier for your readers, and also it used instead of quotations.
To day, I will practice how to summarize articles and paraphrase things. I will write two articles each for summarizing and paraphrasing.

<Summarizing and Paraphrasing form the Handouts>

*Summarizing- The Last Days of the Samurai
In Japanese society, Samurai had a special position in society. There was a belief that only people with Samurai blook cna fight well, so they given some special previleges. But after modernization of Japan, goverment no longer needed Samurai's help. Most of the Samurai's rights and previleges were taken away. So the most of Samurai were dishonored, which is very important to Samurai who think the honor is very important. Then, there was the great Satsuma Rebellion, but they defeated by a modern army of commoners, then the belief that the people believed destroyed by them.

*Paraphrasing- Bear Attacks

+Original Paragraph
In the Yellowstone National Park in the U.S., statistics show that you are more likely to drown than to be attacked by a bear. In the period between 1839 and 1994, 101 people died from drowning but only 5 people were killed by grizzly bears.

+Paraphrased Paragraph
In the Yellowstone National Park which located in the U.S., there are statics that show there are more cases to die by drowning than attacked by a bear. In the period between 1839 and 1994, 5 people were killed by bears, but 101 people died from drowning. So we can get a result that there are not that many cases to die by attacked by a bear.

<Summarizing and Paraphrasing from Other Things>

*Summarizing- Movie- Catch Me If You Can
Based on the truth, Frank Abagnale Jr. was the best swinder in the history. He went out from house because his parents divorced with $25. He ran from Manhatten, vowing to regain father's money back. He used a lot of  fake checks for $4,000 ,000, and have fake jobs which were PanAm pilot, a pediatrician, and attorney. He had been pursued by FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, so he must go into the jail for long time. However, Carl Hanratty, who knew the ability of Frank, he made him to work at FBI for finding some fake checks.

*Paraphrasing- Short Articles『Needles are the enemy for balloon dress』

+Original Articles
Despite the inexpensive materials, 7 yen($0.09)for each of the 200 balloons she used, the bubbly creation came with a price tag of well over a thousand dollars, reflecting Hosokai's determination to puncture the stereotype of balloons being something cheap. Most of Hosokai's dresses carry price tags ranging from 150,000 to 300,000 yen($1,930 to $3,860), but she has sold a set of balloon dress, headpiece and bouquet for 1 million yen.

+Paraphrased Paragraph
Hosokai, who made a balloon dress for her party, used 200 balloons hor her dress. Although the materials were inexpensive, the dress had  price tag with over a thousand dollars. Most ofher dresses are very expensive, but although the prices are really high, there are some people buy her dresses. Also, Hosokai sold balloon dress whoch contained the headpiece and bouquet for 1 million yen.

By these practicing to provide summarizing skills and paraphrasing skills, I was able to know how to summarize and paraphrase the articles, and also, this becmae a big chance to learn things from summarizing and paraphrasing the articles.
